Style Elements Defined

What do you see in this painting as the main style elements? Let's put your knowledge to the test!!! I see shape, line and value right away. Not a lot of form. There is a lot depth created in the background through blending which is value. AND the way that I use space in this piece is also important. This process of looking at each painting and deciding the most important style elements is subjective. Color is also a big part of my painting process but I wouldn't say it's the first thing that I notice in this painting.

This is not a clear cut science. But it WILL help you identify WHERE you need to grow and where you need to put your focus.

I love looking at the 7 different style elements and how they play a part in style. The way in which you choose to express each one of these style elements will contribute to your style.

These art elements are: Line, shape, color, form, value, texture and space.

Sometimes the lack of use is part of your style. For example, with space you have minimalism vs. maximalism.

Each one of these style elements will be expressed in your art. But some will stand out more than others! You will also find that one will drive you in your process and style.

For example, color has always been the driving force behind my art making. But other people might be motivated by shape or texture. The point is that there really is no right or wrong way to make art!!!
